Anatomy of Our Brain and Neural Computation
Our brains are complex machines that evolved and developed to compute the best possible (or in other words, fittest) output with a given input. The goal of neural computation is to understand and describe how the brain functions with mathematical and computational language.
Neural Computation is similar to physics but differs in some points. In physics, the best method to study any system is to the isolation of situations that can affect or be affected by the system. However, It is pretty much hart to simplify or reduce the factors in the nervous system. Maybe one of the most important thinks about neural computation is that it is pretty challenging to measure neural activities because it can result in possible damage to the nervous system. We can say that basic physics knowledge can help but it is not
enough.
To be able to understand neural computation, we first need to dig into the anatomy of the brain and neurons. So, let’s talk about what do we know about our brains.
Scientists have divided the brain into 3 parts which are neocortex, limbic brain and reptilian brain. The reptilian brain, the oldest brother of the three, controls our vital functions like heart rate, breathing, body temperature and balance. It is not hard to understand why they called it reptilian brain if we think that we…
