Being Individual in a Society
We develop from birth to the end, but how do we become ourselves?
How do we develop our individuality in the World of Societies?
There are lots of people suffer from various disorders like Dependent Personality Disorder and Autophobia. These people show dysfunctional beliefs about being alone, feeling detached from people around them and become anxious when there is no one around them. Nowadays, many teenagers display abnormal anxiety when they are separated from the internet, social media or peer environment. This shows us how the world makes us more dependent on the environment over time.
Almost everybody wants to be there when they see a picture of different places that adventurers visit. We feel curiosity in the most inner force in us to go and discover new places or get to know new people or a new environment. So why we don’t? We have work to do, schools to go, a family to take care or different excuses. These reasons are important and crucial for our lives, but how do we grow up without listening to ourselves? This can be the strongest proof of how much we are dependent on our environment.
Nature and nurture debates exist in psychology for a very long time. These debates focus on the origins of developmental stages, our behaviors, feelings, cognitive abilities… etc. Some scientists suggest that they are innate whereas some agree on they are learned. The newest and most popular view states both sides are correct because everything makes us is a result of the interaction of our nature with nurture. Our development cannot be separated from our genetics and our environment. Whenever we talk about our ‘self’ and ‘individuality’, there is always a big role of the environment and people around us.
So, as a result, can we say that we depend on the people around us?
Well, the answer is both yes and no. We do depend on people around us since we born and they influence who we become, but we also have control to change the environment if we want. You might want new friends to discover new perspectives but you are too scared of losing the old ones or being alone or you might want to go and find new places and new life for yourself but there are things or ones you cannot leave behind. You might never had a chance to see the world from a different perspective even though you want to. No matter which one is true, you need to know that there are people who feel the same with you, and I feel the same with you many times. However, we need to ask ourselves this question at that time:
Are the things that we cannot leave behind worth to say “I wish” before we die?
The world evolves in a way that forces us to be more dependent on our environment but we can control that somehow, we have the power to change it whenever we want. If you are waiting for the right time, it is anytime that you feel it inside, so don’t look for this power outside.
Humans are intelligent, and intelligence is mainly about the ability of adapt to new situations.
