Relationships between Internet Addiction and Depression in Adolescents
In August 2019, scientists in Taiwan published research about depression and internet addiction among female adolescents. They also share their dataset which is accessible in Google Dataset. The data contains 503 college students and found relationships among depression, health-related behaviours, and Internet addiction in female adolescents.
This was not the first time that internet addiction is found to related depression. A group of scientists from McMaster University conducted a survey with 254 students and correlated internet use with general mental health and wellbeing. The research showed that internet addicts exhibit higher amounts of depression, anxiety and ADHD symptoms as well as problems with planning and time management, attentional impulsivity.
Depression is one of the most common mental health problems in the modern world. If you don't believe me, look into statistics. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression worldwide in 2017. Epidemiology of depression varies widely, from 3% (Japan) to 17% (United States) but the higher rates of depression found in the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and America than in other countries.
