Recent research has shown that individuals who carry a certain variant of TREM2 have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, people who carry two copies of the variant have a 10-fold increased risk of developing the disease. This is a significant discovery, as it provides new insights into the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s disease and could lead to the development of new diagnostic and treatment options.

One potential use of this knowledge is in the development of diagnostic tests for Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is based on cognitive and behavioral symptoms, which can be difficult to distinguish from other forms of dementia. The presence of the TREM2 variant could provide a more specific marker for the disease and improve the accuracy of diagnosis.
